Forty years after the Rainbow Warrior, justice still waits

When France re -brand itself as a climate and ocean leader, the Pacific civilian community reminds the world the world of the non -destructive nuclear heritage and the world of unfinished colonial business, Dave Sweeney writes.

Forty years ago, this week, a bomb placed by French security agents sinks Greenpeace’s flagship, the silence of the Port of Auckland was shattered. Rainbow fighter.

This murder was a reaction of state terrorism against France’s nuclear weapon program and the ongoing colonial influence and legacy of the Pacific on the Heritage.

Twenty years later, a new Pacific Association attempt emerged to call France to “pay dues” to the Pacific.

SUVA -based Pacific defenders gathered Globalization Pacific NetworkTo coincide with the French Sponsored United Nations Ocean Conference (UnocApproximately 80 organizations representing millions of people from the Pacific last month, organized in Nice last month, issued a common civil society declaration that accepts the importance of emergency climate action and ocean protection with the UNOC process, but but declare it:

France’s allegations of being a responsible officer of the ocean undermines with its historical actions in the Pacific:

  • It is a brutal colonial heritage based on the annexation of island countries known as Kanaky-New Caledonia and Ma’ohi Nui-French polynesia.
  • Refuse the completion of the colonization process and the fact that the colonial state is maintained for the “regions özellikle mentioned above, especially in the UN colonialist list. For example, in Kanaky-New Caledonia, while France and agents continue to rely on the long-standing colonization commitments, they arrange processes such as “universal” voting rights to reject their right to self-determination of the domestic population.
  • Thirty-year nuclear violence in the Ma’ohi Nui-French polynesia 193 testing explosion-46 atmosphere and under 150 under the atols of Moruroa and Fangataaufa, both land and seas and people. Approximately 90 percent of the local population resulted in long -term health effects, including radioactive sprinkle, high cancer rates and other radiation -related diseases.
  • Active efforts to conceal the real scope of nuclear violence in Maʻohi Nui-French polynesia, to discredit independent research and to direct resources to prevent transparency around health and environmental effects. These actions reveal a permanent denial and narrative control model that continues to undermine compensation efforts and delay justice for victims and communities.
  • The French argues that about one -third of the United Eez of the Pacific and that it is the largest ocean state in the world, which greatly accrues from Pacific addictions.
  • The supply of French military equipment and the bombing of the Greenpeace’s flagship “Rainbow Warrior ği by the French secret service agents, a state -backed terrorist attack on July 10, on July 10th.

Since the end of the 1980s, France has worked to build on diplomatic, development and defense fronts to get support from Pacific governments. This includes development aid through the agency Française de DévetPement (AFD), Asian Development Fund (ADF), language and cultural changes, scientific cooperation and humanitarian aid.

A complete program of senior exchanges, including a strong diplomatic asset in the Pacific capitals and a three -year France-Ocoania Summit of Leaders Starting in 2003, Paris functions to increase its intimacy and tendency with its feelings and priorities.

Nuclear Test Revival: Global sprinkle with fatal results

French leadership in this UNOC process is once again central of the re -branding efforts as a global leader in climate action, ocean protection champion and supporter of sovereignty.

Nothing can really be ahead.

The truth is that France is more interested as a balancing force that undermines pacific sovereignty rather than a Pacific framework in an Indo-Pacific, and in the context of the great power competition between the US and China.

And our leaders should not allow France to build this new global image on the foundations of the persecution of the Pacific peoples and the ocean continent.

For this reason, the Pacific Civil Association calls France:

  • In 2030, after the elimination of colonialism, before the result of the fourth international ten years, for urgent and irreversible commitments and practical steps to end the colonial existence of the colonial existence in the Pacific; And
  • Maʻohi Nui -French Polynesia caused by 30 -year nuclear violence caused by ocean and human damages and to take responsibility and support the affected communities, environmental improvement of test areas and full and only to commit all health and contamination data to commit full and only compensation.
The Treaty is the best chance to get rid of the worst weapons of the planet

We call the Pacific Leaders to the following:

  • Keep France responsible for the multiple and long -standing debt to the Pacific people; And
  • Make sure that Ma’ohi Nui-French Polynesia and Kanaky-New Calaledonia are on the list of self-management regions to be colonized (UN colonialist list).

Pacific leaders should ensure that France is not successful in laundering the dirty linens that resist the colonial occupation and used as test subjects for/or used as test subjects for industrial-military machines.

Against a global ground of rising global nuclear tensions and concerns, the Pacific expression is a reminder of nuclear hazards and comprehensive and inter -generation stories of deception. And from the continuity of the community struggle and the action for justice, the arc can be gradually bend, but bending, rainbow is colored and does not submit.

As the July 12 Bastille Day and a national freedom, equality and brotherhood celebration, calls for France to walk the speech in the Pacific are constantly and compelling.
