Cottle specifically distorted the Democratic Party’s fundraising messages. titled piece“This Pathetic Infamy is Not the Way to Rebuild a Party.”

“It’s not uncommon for a fundraising request to come from the Democratic Party when I open my email, with the subject line sounding like it was sent by a contrite boyfriend,” he wrote, reportedly adding, “‘Can I explain?’ He claimed that he sent messages like ” ‘You deserve an explanation’ ‘I’m sorry I reached out to you on Sunday, ‘Let me try to convince you to say ‘Please’.”

What he means, he said, is, “These messages telegraph, first and foremost, distrust, pleading, and sadness. It hardly has the air of a confident political team fighting the good fight. My real impulse is not to give money to the party campaign, but to offer to pay for group therapy.”

While he acknowledged that Democrats feel humiliated by their defeat at the hands of President Donald Trump, he insisted that “enough of the public hand-wringing and self-flagellation, especially when it comes to asking people for money.” Instead, he argued: “The Blue team needs to regain some self-respect and reassure voters that they are not being asked to support a bunch of losers.”

He said things weren’t great across the political aisle and joked that the GOP’s fundraising message to voters amounted to: “Give us $20 now, or Barack [Obama]Hillary [Clinton] And [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] “They will send their baby-eating, terrorist-mongering, devil-worshiping minions into your home to imprison your family and turn your dog into a communist.”

But he said one aspect Republicans care about in their messaging is a basic sense of belonging.

“One point in Republicans’ favor: Scrape away the toxic layers of fear and hysteria in their demands, and if you squint hard enough, you can sometimes catch a glimmer of something constructive. Much of the messaging sells pride and a sense of belonging, the primitive impulses at the heart of the MAGA movement.”

Even so, he said, that tribalism is based on exclusion, something he said Democrats cannot capitalize on.

“The fundamental problem — perhaps the fundamental problem — with Trumpism in general is that it relies on divisiveness and hatred to foster that sense of community. That only makes it more important for Democrats to present a strong, confident, compelling counteroffer,” he said.

By contrast, he noted, Democrats “might skip the ‘Patriot’ speech. Their voters don’t act that way. Likewise, bullying orders are unlikely to resonate in a party that isn’t trained to follow a strong man.”

As dated as some of the optimistic messages from the Obama era may have been, he noted that it at least gave people a sense of hope, and with that in mind, “Democrats should focus on making sure voters are proud to support their team again.”
