Iran death toll rises; Ali Khamenei’s son Motjaba Khamenei named new supreme leader; ASX, global sharemarkets down
The British defense minister said the drone that hit the British military base RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus last week was fired from “Lebanon or Iraq”.
UK Defense Secretary John Healey He announced the update in the House of Commons on Monday night (London time).
“A small drone from Lebanon or Iraq hit our base in Cyprus,” he said.
Healey said British troops stationed at the US base in Bahrain were “within a few hundred meters of an Iranian attack”.
“Even after the Iranian president apologized and promised to Gulf countries over the weekend, Iran has hit several countries with drones and missiles, including Bahrain, where 32 civilians were injured in one attack and a desalination plant was hit in another,” he said.
“We fully condemn these attacks. They put hundreds of thousands of people, including British citizens and members of our armed forces, at risk.”
Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron had promised to send additional warships to the Eastern Mediterranean to defend Cyprus and strengthen the security of allies in the region, which has become unstable due to the Iran war.
