The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings as temperatures reach minus 12C.
It’s the “coldest night so far this winter” and after snowfall across the UK, forecasters are warning of icy conditions that could cause disruption.
This morning (Friday, November 21), rain, sleet, wet snow and small hail will cause wet surfaces in many places and areas of icy conditions on the last day of cold weather.
The Met Office predicts temperatures could drop to around minus 7C in parts of England and Wales and minus 12C in Scotland on Friday.
Snowfall is expected to continue in Scotland, with up to 5 cm of snowfall in some areas.
There is also a chance of more snowfall in the North East as ‘winter showers will continue to feed inland from the North Sea’.
Newcastle Upon Tyne is one of the English regions that could experience further snowfall, with up to 3cm of snow.
With snowfall increasing and temperatures below freezing, the Met Office has warned to ‘keep yourself and your family safe’ as roads and pavements are likely to be slippery.
Forecaster Simon Partridge said: “We look set to experience the coldest night so far this winter, with large areas below freezing.
“And the main reason for that is that there is a small wave of high pressure moving across the UK tonight and basically the main difference between this and previous nights is that the winds are much lighter.
“Friday is really the end of the cold weather, because once we get to the weekend things get back to average.”
The warnings came after schools across the country were forced to close, roads were blocked and many people were left without power.
