Traffic was stopped in both directions on a busy section of the M5 due to a “police incident”. Highway camera footage shows traffic chaos, with vehicles crashing bumper to bumper and coming to a complete stop.

The police incident occurred between Junction 19 near the A369, Martcombe Road in Portishead, and Junction 18 on the M49. The exact nature of the incident is unknown. Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: “All traffic was temporarily stopped and traffic stabilized due to a police incident on the M5 in both directions from J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead) to J18 M49. Just before 12.15pm all traffic was stopped.”
