Trump lashes out at NATO as he rages over Greenland – ‘piece of ice!’ | World | News

Donald Trump once again criticized NATO, hours after his important meeting with alliance chief Mark Rutte. The US President lashed out at Truth Social for criticizing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for not intervening in the Iran war.
“NATO WAS NOT THERE WHEN WE NEED IT AND THEY WON’T BE THERE WHEN WE NEED IT AGAIN. DON’T FORGET THAT BIG, MISMANAGED, ICE PIECE OF GREENLAND!!! President DJT,” Trump said in a post. Rutte, meanwhile, told CNN his conversation with Trump was “very frank” and “very open” despite clear disagreements. “He is clearly disappointed with many NATO allies and I can understand what he means,” Rutte said.
Conflicted, Rutte said that in his view only “some” NATO countries had not stepped in to assist operations in Iran, and that “the vast majority of Europeans” had.
Rutte argued that the world is now “definitely” safer, noting Trump’s leadership in reducing Iran’s nuclear threat. He added that NATO members do not view the war in Iran as illegal and that the majority believe it is important to reduce Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Ahead of Wednesday’s talks, Trump discussed the idea of leaving NATO after members informed him they did not want to participate in the country’s military operation and resisted calls to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The White House did not provide details about the meeting. Delivering his message, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said NATO was “tested and failed.”
“It’s pretty sad that NATO has turned its back on the American people over the last six weeks at a time when the American people fund their defense,” Leavitt told reporters.
He later shut down Iran’s claims that the Strait of Hormuz was closed due to Israeli attacks on the regime’s proxy terrorist groups in Lebanon. Two Iranian publications shared: “Strait of Hormuz completely closed, oil tankers forced to turn back”
Leavitt insisted they saw “an increase in traffic on the strait today.” Iran had warned earlier on Wednesday that Trump’s ceasefire deal could go down in flames after giving Washington an ultimatum that no peace talks could succeed while Israel continues to fight terrorists in Lebanon.
