This perpetual question has returned once again in the wake of the glorious lifestyle of ‘Satua Baba’. Jagatguru Mahamandaleshwar Santosh Das, president of Satua Baba Peeth, made headlines and became the talk of the town not with his spiritual discourses but with his luxurious lifestyle.

He not only drives luxury cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo and Land Rover Defender worth over Rs 3 billion, but also boasts of expensive watches and ornaments. His collection of high-end vehicles created a fusion of conviction, grandeur and modernity at the age-old Magh Mela, located at the confluence of the legendary Saraswati rivers Ganges, Yamuna and Prayag. Also known as Satua Baba, he sparked curiosity, debate and viral chatter among devotees, media and social media.
But his life wasn’t that simple; it was truly filled with struggle and a rags-to-riches story, with a twist of course. Born Santosh Tiwari in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, he left his home and family at the age of 11, leaving him with nothing to defend himself except courage and self-confidence. Satua Baba embarked on the path of meditation, spiritual learning and service. After a long struggle full of dedication and perseverance, he became the 57th Acharya of Vishnu Swami Sampradaya in 2012 after the death of the sixth Peethadhishwar Brahmaleen Yamunacharya Ji Maharaj Satua Baba.

His roller coaster ride and rising stature in the spiritual community reached a new peak on Mahakumbh 2025, when he was conferred with the prestigious title of Jagatguru. He is now recognized as a spiritual authority not only in Kashi but throughout North India. It symbolizes the new-age image of saints who blend devotion, leadership and public participation and emerge as a new brand of religious leaders.
Authorities have allotted Satua Baba the largest ashram space in Magh Mela 2026, reflecting his importance in the spiritual hierarchy. His ashram contrasts simplicity with traditional ascetic practices inside, in keeping with the flourishes outside. Anyone stepping out of the ashram is shocked to see extremely luxurious vehicles, including the multi-chrome Land Rover Defender and the Porsche 911 Turbo. This lifestyle attracts crowds of devotees who take selfies and click pictures. His lifestyle and collection of luxury cars provide a contrast and challenge traditional perceptions of saints. These suggest that today’s spirituality can coexist with displays of wealth when framed as a tool of service and influence.

Political parties and politicians in Uttar Pradesh follow Satua Baba with deep interest and find an opportunity to connect with their followers that can translate into votes. Aziz was seen with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath many times in Varanasi, PPrayagraj and other places. CM Yogi openly praised him in Gorakhpur for promoting unity among citizens and encouraging spiritual harmony. In December last year, Prayagraj District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma’s ashram once again came into the limelight when he was spotted cooking rotis at his camp during Magh Mela inspections. The video went viral and sparked comments and political speculation.
However, stressing that administrative duties should be given priority, Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya advised officials not to be distracted by such symbolic actions. It added a layer of political intrigue to Satua Baba’s growing influence and showed how his presence at religious events resonated beyond the spiritual sphere and within the corridors of power.

Satua Baba has no regrets about his luxury cars. Speaking to the media, he emphasized that his collection was intended to support spiritual activities and yogis, not personal tastes. When asked about the price of his Land Rover Defender, he deflected the question and humorously replied, “Ask GGoogle.” It went viral and added to his persona as a modern, media-savvy spiritual leader. He also praised CM Yogi Adityanath for supporting Sanatan Dharma and indirectly criticized the previous political regimes. Satua Baba reflects a paradigm shift in the spirituality business by combining devotion, public impact and modern luxury.
