Prince Harry and Meghan Markle issue major announcement | Royal | News

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a series of proposals to protect consumers and workers as part of her 2026 address. The proposals include a new DIGIT office that will “oversee digital security and technological governance”.

Governor Hochul has already introduced several pieces of legislation to keep children safe on social media, regulate fringe AI model developers, stop AI-powered chatbots from encouraging suicide and self-harm, outlaw AI-generated child sexual abuse material, and bring transparency to AI-powered corporate pricing practices — issues the Duke and Duchess have long been passionate about.

In an announcement this week, he vowed to continue focusing on protecting young people online, putting commonsense protections in place for artificial intelligence, algorithms and other technical advances that “could lead to unintended consequences.”

Harry and Meghan praised the announcement, adding: “This also begs the question of why the technology couldn’t have been developed with safeguards in place from the start – so individual states and countries wouldn’t have to clean up the mess piece by piece?”

The Sussex couple said they hope to “see leaders around the world move in this direction” and take a “holistic approach” to the ways new technologies impact daily life.

Harry and Meghan said: “Leadership in the digital age looks like putting citizens first and focusing on how innovation can serve them rather than endanger them.”

This comes just days before Prince Harry’s return trip to the UK next week.

The duke will give evidence in his case against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), publisher of the Daily Mail.

The trial will begin on Monday, January 19, and Harry will appear in the witness box in London on Thursday, January 22.
