Venezuelans Pray for Peace During Divina Pastora Procession

BARQUISIMETO, Venezuela (AP) — Thousands of Venezuelans prayed for their country Wednesday. They gathered in a large Catholic procession in Barquisimeto, about 270 kilometers west of Caracas, to honor Divina Pastora, a title given to the Virgin Mary. The longing for peace, prosperity and health comes at a time of political uncertainty following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro on January 3.

Following the military operation that brought Maduro to the United States, President Donald Trump said he would rule Venezuela at least temporarily and use it to sell its large oil reserves to other countries. Trump endorsed Delcy Rodríguez as Venezuela’s acting president. “We pray for our country, because our country really needs God,” housewife Miriam Espinoza said during Wednesday’s parade.

“Let’s have peace and let our country return to normal.” The pilgrimage in honor of Divina Pastora takes place every January 14. The parade draws about 2 million people and stretches about 4 miles (7 kilometers), according to local officials. The procession is a cornerstone of Catholic identity in Barquisimeto, drawing generations of families to the annual expression of faith. “For us, being in Barquisimeto means everything,” said civilian engineer Johenny Hernández, who attended the event with several relatives. “Our Lady walks with us as we move towards Jesus Christ.” He said he and his brother were facing health problems that prevented them from walking the entire distance. But they still decided to participate, praying for their speedy recovery.

Clara Castillo also prayed for her son’s health and a better future for her country. He said his dedication dates back 39 years to when his son was diagnosed with hemophilia at age 1. “My faith has been there ever since, and for the rest of my days I will ask God to give me the health I need,” he said. “And today I pray for my beloved Venezuela.” ___ Hernández reported from Mexico City. ___ Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US and funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.
