NYPD officer shoots stolen car driver who struck cops in the Bronx

A New York City Police Department officer on Sunday shot a driver who tried to flee from police after the vehicle was reported stolen, according to authorities.
A silver Kia Sportage was reported stolen from the Bronx and tracked via license plate readers, then located by police as the driver drove along West Fordham Road.
Police officers attempted to pull the driver over and repeatedly instructed the driver and passenger to get out of the vehicle.

The driver allegedly flipped the car, hitting multiple police officers and an unmarked police vehicle, then went forward and hit another officer.
“While NYPD members were around the car, the driver of the stolen vehicle put the car in reverse, struck a member, struck one of the unmarked vehicles, and eventually … struck multiple NYPD members. He then started the Kia and turned the Kia’s wheels to the right toward where the Sergeant was standing. He drove the car into the sergeant, who was thrown to the ground,” said Aneudy Castillo, deputy chief and commander of Patrol Borough Bronx North.

As the driver attempted to leave the area, a police officer on top of a nearby vehicle opened fire and attacked the driver.
The driver was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital in stable condition. The police officers involved in the incident were also taken to local hospitals in stable condition.

The driver and the police officer who were injured in the incident were taken to hospitals in the region and it was learned that their health conditions were good. (WNYW)

Charges are pending against the driver of the stolen vehicle.
The incident was captured on body-worn camera footage and the investigation is ongoing.
Police said the suspect driving the stolen vehicle was arrested for shooting another man in February. He was charged with multiple felonies, including attempted aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a firearm.
