In an interview Monday, activist actress Jane Fonda touted her upcoming musical “Dear Everything” as a timely “Earth opera” to spread environmentalism to a new generation.
Fonda has a long history of political activism; most notably his controversial actions during his opposition to the Vietnam War. Posing on top of a Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun led to her being nicknamed “Hanoi Jane” and many accused her of treason.
He recently talked about his role in the one-night environmental musical. “Dear Everything” It’s happening on Earth Day. He outlined that the musical is about the outbreak of conflict in a small, struggling American town where adults try to sell their native forest to a lumber company and a young woman mobilizes her teenage friends to stop it.
“He travels the country and everywhere he goes there’s a choir,” he said. “It’s called ‘World choir’ in the play. There will be local youth choirs everywhere, and the money will go to local youth groups working on climate. We’re giving away a five-money prize to climate-focused youth groups on Wednesday night.”

A “Today” show host asked where that came from, noting that Fonda has been an outspoken environmentalist for decades.
He responded by recalling that he grew up in Los Angeles, in the middle of nature, to the point where “the birds, the bobcats, the mountain lions, the coyotes, they were my friends, the trees and the weeds.”
Claiming that the environment is being destroyed by the burning of fossil fuels, he continued: “It breaks my heart and I have children and grandchildren. So I want to fight for their future and, you know, who are we to be so arrogant as to allow the natural world to be destroyed?”

The environmentalist actor said that the name of the play is “Everything Dear” and that it emphasizes that humans are “a part of nature” and added, “And if we destroy it, we destroy our own life support system. I have watched the play many times and it always makes me cry with happiness.”
Another aspect he said was key to the environmental campaign was embracing collective action, saying: “One person can’t do too much” but “to be truly effective we have to unite with other people. It’s a collective. Again, that’s why I love this play. It shows how collective action can be done by community – lessons from Minneapolis, Minneapolis. You need community. You need love. You need people to come together.”

“And so, individuals look for a local part of an organization,” he suggested. “Is there an oil pipeline trying to go through your city? Is there a toxic dump? Are they trying to put persistent chemicals in your water? Get something like that and then organize with your neighbors to stop it.”
