Tech giants can’t train AI on copyright content, but battle isn’t over

Australia’s cultural sector had a winning experience with Attorney-General Michelle Rowland this week to mix up The Productivity Commission’s proposed text and data mining (TDM) exemption in copyright law.
This means: for now Copyright Law it stands. Technology companies using Australian copyrighted material will be subject to the usual licensing regulations. If they want to use Australian novels to teach their big-language models how to write, they’ll have to pay for it. Or at least they will if they are following the law and the law can be enforced.
