Teen who murdered Dr Ash Gordon jailed for at least 12 years

When the teenagers entered the house for the third time, with the criminal holding a folded hunting knife, Gordon woke up and disturbed them. The group escaped from the house and ran down the street, along a creek path and through a retirement village.

Gordon’s roommate, now awake, called the police as he got into his Mercedes to search for the teenagers and their belongings.

When three of the teens were found nearby, they ran into the driveway of a house surrounded by a high wooden fence. The two managed to jump and escape while the criminal had no time.

“There’s no point in running, the police are on their way,” Gordon said.

A physical altercation ensued and Gordon was stabbed multiple times, including fatally in the chest, Dixon said.

He died on the road near where he parked his car, when one of the other youths turned around to kick him in the head.

The criminal showed the knife to his friends when they reconvened nearby, telling them he had “killed a man.” They then returned to the house party; The criminal, with blood on his pants, was telling others that something “super serious” had occurred.

The knife was never found.

Dixon said the teens then burned their clothes while filming themselves laughing.

They then came up with an “unrealistic” plan to go to the Gold Coast and charter a plane to Papua New Guinea.

The 16-year-old was arrested and charged on January 17, 2024.

During the trial, the court heard the teenager claimed he had acted in self-defence, but rejected that claim when the jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder.

“Dr. Gordon did not intend to harm you when he got out of the car. He intended to hold you in some way until the police arrived.” said Dixon.

“You knew that Dr. Gordon was the victim of your aggravated burglary… you knew that he had the legal right to make a citizen’s arrest.

“This was an armed attack on a barefoot, unarmed man who was only there because you entered his home.”

Dixon said victim impact statements from Gordon’s family painted a sad picture of his sudden and senseless death.

She said he was a kind, hard-working, cheerful, intelligent and compassionate man who, at the age of 33, had just started his own medical practice.

“His death plunged his family into a world of great pain. The trauma never ends,” Dixon said.

The judge said that the killer is now 18 years old, his mother is a lawyer in the public services and his father is an electrical contractor.

He aspired to be a professional basketball player before saying racist taunts slowly exposed him to crime and violence and he began carrying knives.

He stated that the teenager had no real insight into his crime and did not show signs of remorse, instead maintaining his innocence.

“People have the right to live in their homes and live their lives in peace and security,” the judge said.
“If young people choose to carry knives and commit violent crimes, they should expect to face lengthy prison sentences.”

The killer was sentenced to 17 years in prison with a non-parole period of 12 years.

Because his term has expired, he will be eligible for release in 2036.
