Teenager Dies In Spain During World Cup Celebrations

MADRID, July 20 (Reuters) – A 13-year-old died and two others were injured when a fountain partially collapsed in western Spain early on Monday, emergency services said.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight in Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled medieval city of about 12,000 people in Salamanca province near the Portuguese border.

Regional emergency services said hundreds of residents had gathered at the Arbol Gordo fountain in the city center when the top of the monument broke off, hitting several people.

Ciudad Rodrigo’s city hall expressed its condolences for the victim in a statement.

“The whole city feels this loss and shares the grief of the little boy’s friends and family… What was supposed to be a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory turned into a tragedy,” the statement said.
