Over the last five years, a large number of banks have been lost to the UK’s high streets due to the closure of many branches. One of the banks that announced hundreds of closures was HSBC, which closed more than 300 branches. Although HSBC did not make any closures in 2025, many of its branches closed between 2020 and 2023.

But this isn’t the only bank closing some of its physical locations; Many other banks do the same. Companies such as Santander, Lloyds and Halifax have also closed some of their branches in the last few years. This year, Lloyds Bank closed 96 branches, Santander closed 76 branches, and Halifax closed 100 branches. The change comes as more people turn to online banking with less need for physical locations.

HSBC said it has not announced a branch closure program since November 2022. The bank said in August 2022 that it had committed to not announcing a new closure program until at least 2026. A bank spokesman said HSBC was committed to investing in its branch network and currently had no plans to close any branches beyond the branch commitment. HSBC continues to support its customers and communities beyond its physical locations, including HSBC Local and Banking Centres, and provide access to accounts through the Post Office network.
