The Ashes: Mark Wood ruled of England squad, Matthew Fisher called up

It was a huge blow to the tourists, who were already 2-0 down, and to Wood, whose international future was now in doubt.

Wood, one of the fastest bowlers to play for England, has taken 119 wickets in 38 Tests since making his debut in 2015.

He was part of the team that won the Ashes in 2015, lifted the 50-over World Cup in 2019 and was part of the England squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2022.

His career was devastated by injuries and the Perth Test marked the end of his 15-month absence from Test cricket, first due to an elbow injury and then a knee problem.

Wood bowled 11 overs without taking a wicket at Perth Stadium. He traveled to the mid-series break in Noosa with the rest of the England squad, but will not be part of the group for the third Test in Adelaide, which starts on 17 December (23:30 16 December GMT).

Fisher, 28, from Surrey, won his only Test cap on the West Indies tour in 2022. He was part of the England Lions team on their tour of Australia.

Fisher, thought to be adept at bowling with the Kookaburra ball used in Australia, got ahead of Josh Hull.

Sonny Baker and Tom Lawes would have been other options, but neither was included in the Lions squad due to injury.

Meanwhile, Australian Josh Hazlewood will not take part in the remainder of the series.

Hazlewood, 34, initially missed the first two Tests with a hamstring problem and is currently suffering from an Achilles tendon problem.

But Australia coach Andrew McDonald confirmed captain Pat Cummins will make a comeback when the home team announces its squad for the third Test on Wednesday.

Australia will make at least two changes to their squad, with Cummins set to return from a back problem and off-spinner Nathan Lyon likely to play in Adelaide after being out day-night in Brisbane.

Seamers Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett are candidates to be left out.

Australia may also recall batsman Usman Khawaja after the opener struggled with a back injury in the first Test and then missed the second.

McDonald said Khawaja could return to the fifth row without damaging the new opening partnership of Travis Head and Jake Weatherald.
