US Travel Chaos: 1,800 Flights Cancelled As Winter Storm Hits NYC, Boston & Detroit | World News

Millions of Americans returning home after the holidays were stranded by the severe winter storm that hit the United States on Friday. The “Clipper System”, which turned one of the busiest travel days of the year into a logistical nightmare, caused thousands of flight cancellations and delays at the busiest airports.
As of Friday afternoon, at least 1,802 flights were reported canceled and more than 22,340 flights were delayed, according to FlightAware data. Flights were disrupted as the National Weather Service (NWS) warned of hazardous weather conditions from the Great Lakes to New England.
Airport Mayhem: New York, Detroit and Boston Most Affected

Nearly half of that number is concentrated in the metropolitan area of the nation’s largest city. The three largest gateways in this nation’s largest city (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports) are struggling to cope with congestion as visibility decreases and all available runways must be cleared.
Heavy Snow: Areas of the Lower Hudson Valley, Long Island and Connecticut will see heavy bands of up to 10 inches of snow.
Flight Delays Nationwide: Beyond New York, Detroit has also reportedly become a major “choke point”; airlines predict flow-on effects could last through the weekend.
“Treacherous” Road Conditions and New York Travel Advisory
New York City officials also issued a travel advisory warning that extremely low temperatures may not allow snow to melt, resulting in ice rink conditions on highways.
Ice Storm ThreatWhile an ice storm warning is in place in western Pennsylvania, power lines are expected to be covered in ice and roads are expected to become impassable.
Danger of Returning from HolidayIn its statement, NWS warned citizens not to go out unnecessarily until Saturday morning and said, “Road conditions will be dangerous for those returning from vacation.”
Energy Markets Respond to Cold Spell
Although everything seems stable in the US power grid at the moment, there has been a shockwave in the energy market in response to the sudden drop in temperature.
Natural Gas Virgo: U.S. natural gas futures contracts rose 3.3% last Friday as demand for the heating oil peaked.
Deceptive Prediction: A stronger cold wave is forecast to hit DC and the Mid-Atlantic region over the weekend, ensuring a cold end to 2025.
Regional Forecast: Freezing Rain on ‘Clipper’ Systems “Complex weather is expected as a clipper system out of the Midwest interacts with a strong high pressure system out of eastern Canada.”
This is creating a dangerous mix of freezing rain, sleet and heavy snow for the Upper Midwest and Northeast through tomorrow morning, according to the weather service.
