A former royal staffer has given a rare insight into one of Prince William and Princess Kate’s Halloween parties.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have been married since 2011, but their shared history goes back much further.
William and Kate first met in 2001 while studying at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
Their friendship turned into a relationship between 2002 and 2003, and the couple made their relationship official in 2004.
The royal couple have hosted many parties over the years, and a now-former royal butler split the beans at one of the parties, which took place in October 2009, two years before their wedding.
Grant Harrold, who worked as butler to King Charles while he was Prince of Wales between 2004 and 2011, also looked after William and Kate during his time at Highgrove before ceasing his service to the royal family.
To talk Smooth FlipsMr Harrold told what really went on during his years in the royal service, including behind-the-scenes details of a 2009 Halloween party in Wales.
She also revealed the preparations for the event, the couple’s special guest list, and the spooky location where the event took place.
Mr Harrold said: “The younger royals would go away for Halloween and I would go to Scotland with Prince William and Kate.
“I remember back in 2009 they had a Halloween party in one of the remote cabins on the site. Me and one of the other butlers had everything decked out with cobwebs and spiders for Halloween.”
The former royal butler revealed that the spooky royal party had a few surprising details as there was no Halloween-themed meal and guests weren’t wearing fancy clothes.
She explained: “The dinner itself wasn’t Halloween themed but we made the decorations all spooky. They invited a group of their friends over, it wasn’t very big but there were about 12 people there.”
“They weren’t wearing fancy dresses, they were all wearing jeans and shirts – smart, casual clothes. I don’t know if Prince Harry was there, but William always invited his brother to things like this. William and Kate would absolutely love it.”
She added: “The kitchens packed the food for William and Kate to take down. They took it all down themselves, unpacked it and served it themselves.
“Then they washed it all, packed the boxes, and brought them back to the main house.”
