A town in the UK has been named the “fattest” town in the country on multiple occasions. Some residents of the town in Wales appear to eat three takeaway meals a day. Most adults in the former steel town of Ebbw Vale in south Wales are classed as overweight or obese. Meanwhile, 73 percent of the restaurants in the towns in the Welsh valleys are takeaway services. Councilors have brought the issue to public attention multiple times and said rules should be introduced to help solve the problem.
In fact, officials want signs advertising ultra-processed, high-fat, salty and sugary foods to be banned on city-owned land. This comes as the life expectancy of women in the town is decreasing in the country. Last year Councilor Sonia Behr introduced the motion to Blaenau Gwent Council, saying: “They [the signs] If you get your attention, you’ll think I’m going to come in and have some chips or something.” He said signs advertising such foods should be “limited in size and brightness.”

It seems that local people are aware of the seriousness of the problem. In fact, they say the problems stem from much more than people’s eating habits.
A local man recently said: Sun: “Everyone is depressed. You can see it on people’s faces when you walk around. This is the heart of Blaenau Gwent and it should be a great place to live but it’s not. It’s one of the worst and it’s a shame.”
“The town is bankrupt, but it was thriving in the 1980s and 1990s when the pits were still open. I can see why this is the worst case scenario for obesity because there are so many kebab shops and the town provides that for people.”
He added: “If you want a cheap kebab, you can buy it, but it doesn’t help them at all. There are too many overweight people here with serious health problems.”
“The council should attract better businesses, stop so many kebab shops opening but all they care about is getting council taxes and business rates.”

The town was humiliated last year when a Canadian YouTube creator posted a video about his visit explaining what the “fattest” town in England was like.
He said in the video: “Everyone here is so nice, like the whole town. That’s probably because they’re well-fed. Like you don’t want to deal with angry people, right?”
Meanwhile, a woman told him: “Obesity has become normalized and everyone here is obese. It’s the lack of education, the lack of social normality and the environment you live in.”

It is estimated that 64 per cent of British adults are currently overweight, measured by Body Mass Index (BMI).
Another Ebbw Vale resident told The Sun: “It’s so easy to find bad food here. We have so many takeaways that people are getting fast food delivered to their homes too.”
“There’s a person on my street who gets two deliveries a day. I think they mostly order pizza, judging by the shape of the box. I’m classed as obese due to my Body Mass Index and I do my best to eat healthy, but it’s hard when I’m out and about.”
“There’s a place called Boom that offers Indian vegetarian options, but even they’ve started doing cheese toasties and chips because that’s what people want.”
