Thousands of new Volkswagens recalled after major fault which could increase risk of accidents causing ‘serious injury, death’

Thousands of new Volkswagens have been recalled after a dangerous defect was discovered; with the warning that this defect could increase the risk of an accident that could cause “serious injury or even death.”
More than 5,000 Volkswagen Golf, Tiguan and Tayron models are affected by the recall announced on Tuesday by the Federal Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sports and the Arts.
A software issue with the power steering motor system lies behind the notification.
“Due to a software issue, the power steering motor system may not operate as intended under certain driving conditions. This may cause steering effort to suddenly increase while driving,” the recall notice states.
“A sudden increase in steering effort can increase the risk of an accident resulting in serious injury or death to occupants and other road users.”
Volkswagen urges affected vehicle owners to contact their preferred dealer as soon as possible to make an appointment to have the software update performed free of charge.
The recall affects 5,116 Volkswagen models between 2025-26.
