Thurmaston shopping centre fire latest: Roof collapses in huge blaze in Leicestershire

A massive fire broke out in a shopping center in Leicestershire.

Fire crews were called to Thurmaston Shopping Center in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Dramatic photographs taken from the scene show that part of the roof collapsed and smoke rose from the top of the building, with a large crowd watching around.

The fire department sent eight fire engines, two aircraft and more than 40 firefighters to the scene, a spokesman said. The fire is now extinguished.

Citizens were warned to keep windows and doors closed as the smoke spread to the region.

While some stores are expected to open on Saturday, many have been forced to close, with Greggs, Mountain Warehouse and M&S remaining closed. Leicestershire Live reported.

Jordan Slack, 29, who lives near the mall, said he was “shocked” by the fire.

“I couldn’t believe it. Nothing like this has ever happened here. I mean, this mall has been here for about 20 years and it’s the first major incident we’ve had here,” he said.

“Nothing is actually happening in Thrmaston, as you can see everyone is watching what’s going on here this morning.

“When I first saw the photos, I thought the fire would engulf the entire shopping mall, but thankfully it was stopped before it grew any further.”
