Huge fire breaks out at abandoned Odeon cinema in Kent | UK | News

Fire crews were called to extinguish a blaze at a derelict cinema in Kent on Saturday afternoon. Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) was called to St George’s Place, the former Odeon building in Canterbury, just after 2pm. While 15 fire trucks arrived at the scene, residents were asked to keep their doors and windows closed due to the smoke coming from the building.

People traveling through Canterbury city center have been told to expect delays due to nearby road closures. The first update stated: “Crews are advising people living or traveling near St Georges Place in Canterbury to close windows and doors due to smoke from a fire at an abandoned building.

“Expect traffic to be heavier than usual as a nearby road is also closed. Ten fire engines are currently on duty and crews are working to extinguish the flames.”

“Please share this information with loved ones in the area who may be affected but do not have access to the internet.”

At 5pm a spokesman said the service was making “good progress” on the fire using hose reel jets.

In another update at 6.30pm, people were told to keep their doors and windows closed as firefighters remained at the scene.
