After financial woes, mushroom doctor closes his country practice
Two and a half years after doctor Chris Webster alerted police to triple murderer Erin Patterson, he says financial turmoil has forced him to close his practice in the country.
But – after a circus of media coverage, controversy and punishment from the medical regulator – he remained as loyal as ever to his community and vowed to “go it alone”.
Webster confirmed that Leongatha Healthcare, a long-running GP clinic in the small South Gippsland town that became the center of the Patterson saga, closed its Koonwarra Road doors this week as its lease expired. Age.
But he maintains ownership of the business with his wife and plans to reopen the practice as the sole physician in another building in the city within a few weeks.
Webster, who was working as a visiting medical officer at Leongatha Hospital when Patterson and his victims arrived there in 2023, said the decision was difficult but a “financial necessity.”
He was penalized by the medical regulator in September after identifying Patterson in a speech. messenger of the sun Reporting her as a “crazy bitch” and a “disturbed sociopathic lunatic” sparked intense backlash.
He later defended the comments: Age This was his solemn reaction to the shocking realization of Patterson’s guilt as a key witness in the triple murder case.
“I was scared. I was completely freaking out,” Webster said at the time.
“These thoughts and words were completely private; never documented, never published until the verdict.”
On Saturday Webster said it was no longer possible to run his clinic on a large scale after the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners stripped him of the right to supervise other doctors.
Webster said the fine meant some doctors at his clinic had to reduce their working hours and examination rooms became unusable. Leongatha Healthcare’s website lists 19 tenant doctors at the practice, which appears to have hundreds of patients.
“The decision had an immediate impact and, of course, a devastating long-term impact,” Webster said.
The college could not comment on Webster due to its privacy policy. But, according to audit guidelinesGeneral practitioners with medical registration conditions cannot supervise other general practitioners in training.
Webster ultimately blames the Medical Board of Australia; The administration placed conditions on his registration in September, demanding that he complete at least eight hours of one-on-one professional and ethics training and undertake mentoring for at least five one-hour sessions per month.
Webster spoke to Patterson when he arrived at Leongatha Hospital complaining of stomach-like symptoms on July 31, 2023, and was stunned when he was discharged after only five minutes of medical attention.
With serious concern, he called Triple Zero and requested that his medical condition be checked by the police; It was a pivotal point that would define the next two years of his life, and it would be the first time emergency services heard of the fatal lunch that would eventually claim the lives of three people.
The events that followed that 24-hour hospital shift were difficult to deal with, Webster said Saturday. But with so many affordable rental options in the city, she feels like “the universe is telling me everything will be okay.”
“Community is what has been my protection and paved the way for me to keep going,” Webster said. “When I told the pizza shop owner yesterday, there were already three opportunities. [for local leases].”
Webster said all staff at the clinic would receive their benefits and existing patients would be informed of the clinic’s closure after business reached a “critical” point on Monday. “I am working feverishly to get everything back on track,” he said.
He expected to be training again in as little as three weeks.
Patterson was sentenced to 33 years in prison without parole for the murders of Heather Wilkinson, Don and Gail Patterson, and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson.
