Man allegedly mowed down by out-of-control car outside Melbourne Supanova & Comic Con identified

Tributes have flowed for a Melbourne man who was allegedly struck and killed by an out-of-control car outside the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming convention.

Volka Aksoy, 20, died when a car allegedly drove onto the pavement on Langs Street outside the Melbourne Showgrounds at around 5pm on Saturday.

Mr Astoy died at the scene.

A 20-year-old young man was hospitalized with serious injuries to his lower body, while the third was discharged after receiving shock treatment.

9News reported that Mr. Aksoy had spent the day at a popular comic book convention before the tragedy occurred.

His mother told the agha that her son was a “kind and caring young man” who “valued spending time” with friends and family whom he “deeply loved”.

“She had such a beautiful soul, was deeply loved, and will be deeply missed by all who knew her,” he continued.

Speaking to 9News, Aksoy’s mother stated that her family had difficulty accepting this tragedy and said that her son’s life “was ended very quickly.”

The 20-year-old man worked at a fast food restaurant in the Melbourne suburb of Keysborough; Her friend and colleague Hasha Kong was also paying tribute to her.

“He had big dreams, he was very intellectual,” he said.

“That’s what I’ll miss most about him.

“The team is still devastated. He always came in with a smile on his face. Now he’s watching from above.

Awer Dau, 33, was charged with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving causing death following the alleged incident.

He was not required to speak at his hearing in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday and sat hunched over with his arms on his knees when he appeared on video link from Melbourne West Police Station.

His lawyer told the court that his client would not apply for bail.

The court was told a toxicology report, a forensic examination of the alleged vehicle, a mechanical reconstruction of the crash and CCTV examination, as well as witness statements, still need to be collected and prepared.

Police will allege Mr Dau was on bail at the time.

He will return to court on September 15.

Supanova’s organizers observed a minute of silence at noon in recognition of the tragedy.

“As Supanova Comic Con & Gaming, we are deeply saddened and distressed by the incident that occurred outside the Melbourne Showgrounds this evening,” organizers wrote in a statement on social media.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the unspeakable tragedy unfolding on our doorstep.”

“We have no further details at this time as the incident is still under police investigation and took place outside the Showgrounds area.

“Therefore, we will not engage in any speculation regarding this terrible situation until all the facts are established.”
