Expressing his displeasure over the state government’s decision to reduce SSLC scores from 625 to 525 by abolishing third language marks, K. Vivekananda, MLC, said third language is not limited to Hindi only but includes Marathi, Telugu, Urdu and Sanskrit.
He described the move as “completely unwarranted”, especially during the ongoing SSLC examinations, and warned that it could adversely affect students’ learning abilities.
In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Mr. Vivekananda pointed out that a large number of teachers were engaged in teaching third languages in both government and private schools. He emphasized that learning more than one language helps students communicate better and gain a stronger command of languages, which will be beneficial in their professional careers.
MLC expressed concern that reducing the importance of third languages could undermine students’ ability to learn languages and affect the spirit of diversity among students.
Stating that ignoring third languages will have a wider impact on the education system, he urged the government to take a careful decision keeping in mind the importance of language education.
Meanwhile, teachers of third language subjects, including Hindi, from Mysuru and Chamarajangar districts met Mr. Vivekananda at his office in Mysuru on Monday (March 30) and expressed concerns about neglect of third language education and restrictions on teaching duties. They urged him to discuss the issue with the government and take measures to secure third language education.
