Tour de France rider crashes into the back of support vehicle that slammed on the brakes
The Tour de France wraps up on Sunday, but we didn’t make it to the finish line without one of the weirdest crashes we’ve seen in a while.
Colombian cyclist Einer Rubio was climbing Alpe d’Huez during Stage 19 on Friday, riding behind one of the support cars.
This always seemed like a good idea to me – let it blow a big hole in the air for you – but what Rubio didn’t take into account was that the car would suddenly have to slam on the brakes as the race was proceeding on a narrow road with spectators on both sides.

I know it’s not the same thing, but it’s never a bad time to brush up on road safety.
What you can’t see in this clip is that according to UAE Team Emirates-XRG, what Rubio hit was their car and he had to hit the brakes because a spectator had fallen in front of him.

“A spectator fell directly into the path of the vehicle,” a team spokesman said. Telegram. “The vehicle braked to avoid a collision. This was a very unfortunate incident and something no one wants to see. We wish Einer Rubio a speedy recovery.”

At the time of the incident, Rubio, who was ranked 27th overall, was beaten quite a bit and required 20 stitches. He spent an hour in the medical tent and was flown to the hospital by helicopter for further tests.

I wish for a speedy recovery, but whenever I see something like this my first thought is: Why are they letting the fans get so close? It never ends well.
Being that close to the fans doesn’t make you faster. This could only cause an accident because someone falls in front of a support vehicle or an old lady rides into the peloton on her Rascal scooter.
