Tower of London partially closed after protesters ‘throw food ‘at Crown Jewels display case

Four people have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after a display case containing the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London was covered in food.

The tourist attraction was partially closed while police investigated the possible attack.

The police launched an investigation after reports that the showcase containing the State Crown was damaged.

The Metropolitan Police said officers attended the scene on Saturday morning following reports of criminal damage.

A spokesman for the force said: “Police were called to the Tower of London at 9.48am on Saturday, December 6, following reports of criminal damage to a display case containing the State Crown.

“Four protesters reportedly threw suspicious food onto the box before two of them left the scene.

“Officers worked closely with the City of London Police and security officers and four people were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

“The Tower has been closed to the public while the police investigation continues.”

Built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s, the Tower of London now attracts more than three million visitors a year. The tower displays the Crown Jewels collection and the Coronation Regalia is at the center of this exhibition.

This includes the Imperial State Crown, worn by the monarch at official events such as the conclusion of the coronation and the state opening of parliament.
