Tragedy after at least 80 killed by horror landslides | World | News

While at least 80 people lost their lives in the landslide disaster in Ethiopia, three days of mourning were declared while rescue teams collected the bodies. Landslides resulted in the deaths of dozens of residents in the Gamo Region region in the south of the country in Africa, while 3,461 people were displaced, according to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission.
Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives, Tagesse Chafo, announced that three days of mourning will begin on Saturday. Authorities reported many people missing since the disaster occurred due to heavy rain on Tuesday. Search and rescue efforts have been continuing for days due to the continuous heavy rain in the region.
The Ethiopian government is mobilizing resources in cooperation with regional authorities.
Contributions from private citizens and businesses are also directed to a fund established by the regional government to provide relief materials to those affected.
Heavy rains are affecting countries in East Africa, and the death toll from Saturday’s floods in neighboring Kenya has risen to 62.
The region is expected to see more rainfall due to the rainy season and governments have urged residents to be careful.
Last month, IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Center stated that there is a 45% chance of above-average rainfall in most countries in the region during the March-April-May rainy season.
This includes Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Northern Somalia and Djibouti.
