Tributes are pouring in after it emerged that a young police officer who was seriously injured while responding to a crash died in hospital. Northumbria Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine on Thursday paid tribute to 19-year-old PC Jess Turnbull, who died yesterday, saying he made the “ultimate sacrifice” to keep our communities safe.

The police officer was allegedly struck by a car while responding to a collision on the A189 at Cramlington, Northumberland, on Monday night. The vehicle that allegedly hit the police officer was not connected to the actual accident.
