First Full Moon of Summer 2025 shines this week

Do you have a very open sky in the second half of this week? If so, take a few minutes to look at the sky and witness the beauty of the full bucket.

It takes place in the full moon of July 2025, at 10:39 UTC or 16:39 EDT.

Nevertheless, do not focus too much to see that at that time. The constant side of the month will appear after midnight on the morning of July 10th, from Moonrise to 10th to 11th night, and even when the month rises again on the 11th evening.

This is the first of three full months for the summer of 2025. At the same time, before the ‘super’ trio, which will close the year, it is the second full month in the season and early autumn.

However, if you want to see that the moon looks extremely big, be sure to find it right after the sunset or just before sunrise in the western sky. In both cases, a mysterious effect, known as Moon Illusion, will make our celestial friend look too big!

‘Buck’ Moon? What is this?

Occasionally, except for Blue Moon, every full moon we see during the year has its own popular name. Former farmer Germanac’s publishers gathered these names together at the beginning of the 20th century, inspired by the colonial and European folklore, but mostly by the indigenous peoples of the Northeast United States and the Great Lakes.

According to the former farmer’s almanac: “In July, the full moon is called buck moon because the male deer (buckets) horns are currently in full growth mode. Bucks sheds its horns every year and re -enlarges and produces a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.”

Although the name is most often used to describe this full moon, it refers to much more than a single stage.

Like other developed cultures in the world, the indigenous peoples of North America used a sophisticated lunar calendar to watch time. For example, Anishinaabe visualized the calendars using the pattern of plates in the shell of a turtle. The 28 small plate around the edge of the shell corresponded to the days of the cycle every month, and the 13 large plate on the back of the turtle was 13 months of the year.

Each of the 13 months was given a name similar to Gregorian calendar months. However, the names of the months of Gregorian came from gods, rulers and numerical order in the calendar, while the local names for months were taken from the nature that affected the lives of the peoples at that time.

Coincidentally, Buck Moon is mostly lined up in the Gregorian calendar in July. However, as shown below, it usually does not match the calendar bear perfectly.
