Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez, who recently lost his re-election bid after the RPA backed another candidate, rejected the idea that his city was a political experiment.
“Richmond is not an experiment. It is a shining example of working people realizing their ability to govern themselves without being beholden to corporate influence or large financial interests,” he told Fox News Digital.
Martinez is a member of the RPA and has expressed support for democratic socialism. He said the coalition served as “an alternative to traditional, business-dominated politics.”
“It aims to empower historically marginalized communities by providing meaningful opportunities for residents to participate in shaping the decisions that impact their lives,” the mayor told Fox News Digital.
Richmond’s political importance may extend beyond the city limits. “I don’t know where the Democratic Party is heading,” he said. “They are fractured by many factions, but it is difficult to characterize what the Democratic Party is and what it represents.”
Butt argued that Richmond’s democratic socialist leaders would take over businesses in the city and even get rid of the police if they could.

“They would abolish the police if they could. They’ve been anti-police, they’ve cut the budget, they’ve cut the number of officers, they’ve done everything they can to disband the police. And I don’t know how they believe the world would function without the police, but that’s the way they want it,” Butt said.
He later added, “I think if they banned business and made everything run by the government, especially people in the government, they would do that.”
Mark Wassberg, who recently ran for mayor, also spoke out about Richmond leaders’ disdain for the police.
“I mean, there’s always tension between the Richmond Police Department and the city council,” Wassberg told Fox News Digital. “In fact, RPA hates the Richmond Police Department.”
