Trump says he is sending a hospital ship to Greenland

US President Donald Trump said he was working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to send a hospital boat to Greenland, the Danish region that Trump said he wanted to buy.

Trump announced the plan on social media before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House on Saturday and sitting next to Landry to chat.

“Working with the wonderful Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we will send an amazing hospital boat to Greenland to care for the many sick people who are not receiving care there. On its way!!!” Trump said.

Neither the White House nor Landry’s office responded to questions about the shipment, such as whether the ship was requested by Denmark or Greenland and which patients needed assistance.

The War Department had no immediate comment.

Denmark’s King Frederik made a second visit to Greenland last week in a bid to demonstrate unity with the region against pressure from Trump to buy the island.

Greenland, Denmark and the United States held talks late last month to resolve the situation after months of tensions within the NATO defense alliance.

Trump’s post came hours after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command said it had evacuated a crew member in need of urgent medical treatment from a US submarine in Greenlandic waters, seven nautical miles outside Greenland’s capital, Nuuk.

It was unclear what connection Landry had to the matter or whether the mission had any connection to the evacuation.

The U.S. Navy has two hospital ships, Mercy and Comfort, but neither is stationed in Louisiana.
