Labour strikes migrant returns deal with Iraq – but critics brand it a ‘sham’ | Politics | News

Labour accepted the agreement with a new return for immigrants with Iraq in his final offer to comprehend the crisis of the small boats. The agreement, signed by the Minister of House of Minister Dan Jarvis, will create an official process to send back Iraqis who came to the UK without the right to stay in the country.
Mr. Jarvis signed an agreement during his visit to England by Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister Said Hussein. The Ministry of Interior said the agreement would allow illegal immigrants to “quickly” return.
The Minister of Security said: “This visit strengthens the power of the UK-Iraq partnership and shows our government’s commitment to serious diplomacy, which gives real results.
“As a person who works in Iraq, I first understand the importance of establishing permanent relations in the region, and the new agreement we signed is a proof of the trust and cooperation we have created with our Iraqi colleagues.
“We work together on the difficulties of security, development and migration and struggle with common challenges such as organized crime and irregular migration, and we establish stronger relationships that benefit both countries.”
According to the Ministry of Interior, the number of Iraq coming to the UK by a small boat, until March 2025, the previous year fell from 2,600.
However, the announcement was criticized by Tories, who called it “fake”.
Shadow Interior Minister Chris Philp said: “More than 50,000 illegal immigrants passed through Labour’s worst illegal crisis in our history, Labour’s worst of the ruling channel.
“It has delivered our limits of labor, and the results are felt in our communities by shocking rape from the rising crime and the last cases of sexual assault.
“Now they boast of a return agreement on Iraq, but almost no small boat arrival is Iraq, and most of them are entitled to asylum.
“Worker has scrapped conservative deterrers and created chaos conditions, left the British people to abandon the bill. Only conservatives will stop the transitions and restore the control of the UK borders.”
The agreement with Iraq is the last move to destroy record -breaking channel transitions so far this year.
A one -time agreement with France has recently entered into force, where small boat immigrants can be returned in exchange for a legitimate asylum seeker.
It comes with Baghdad last year after an £ 800,000 encounter with Baghdad to help the country fall into smuggling networks and organized crimes.
Earlier this year, Sir Keir Starmer and Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shii Al-Sudani agreed to strengthen the cooperation with the immigration.
