Speaking of Andrew, Nigel Cawthorne, author of Prince Andrew, Epstein and the PalaceHe said he believed the royal was “reluctant” to lose his title.

He said: “It is only when the new revelations shed light on Prince Andrew’s previous statements that the Prince appears to be committing another act of contrition. This makes the action appear both reluctant and too late.”

Discussing the future and what Andrew might do, she added: “Will the doors no longer open for him at Buckingham Palace? Why hasn’t he become a commoner and adopt the family name Windsor-Mountbatten?”

The name ‘Mountbatten-Windsor’ combines the British Royal Family’s name Windsor and the surname Mountbatten adopted by Prince Philip.
