Trump’s war of words with the Pope sparks fears US President ‘is actually insane’ | World | News

Donald Trump’s bizarre war of words with the Pope – including publishing an AI-rendered image of the US President as a resurrected Christ-like figure – has sparked fears that the most powerful man in the world is “genuinely crazy”.

In a long post on social media, hours before the American navy blockaded Iranian ports on his orders, the US president demanded that the head of the Catholic Church “focus on being the Great Pope, not a politician.”

In a 334-word rant on the Truth Social platform, Trump accused Pope Leo of being “Weak on Crime, Weak on Nuclear Weapons” and said he should “stop serving the Radical Left.”

The president also said the pope should be “thankful” to become pope last year, suggesting that the first North American leader of the Catholic Church was chosen as someone who could “deal with” Mr Trump.

The president wrote: “Leo should be thankful because as everyone knows it was a shocking surprise.

“He wasn’t on any list to be Pope and he was put there by the Church because he was American and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J Trump. If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

Mr Trump, who was among the world leaders who attended Pope Francis’ funeral almost a year ago, amplified his remarks further, telling reporters: “I don’t think he did a very good job. I’m not a fan of Pope Leo.”

Professor Anthony Glees, a foreign policy expert at the University of Buckinghamshire, warned that such an attack should be a huge red flag for America’s allies in the Western world.

Speaking exclusively to the Express, Prof Glees said: “Trump’s attack on the Holy Father defies all rational explanation. “From a political perspective, this is a serious misstep that will put the man who is supposed to lead the free world on the wrong side of public opinion.

“Why is Trump doing this? Why is Trump openly comparing himself to Jesus? One explanation, of course, is that he is actually crazy. There is no point in attacking the Pope. There are countless inmates in asylums around the world who, if you listen to them, will try to convince you that he is actually Jesus Christ and not the stubborn one.”

Prof Glees, who has no real medical concerns about the President’s mental health, points to ongoing political pressures at home, triggered by the economic malaise of America’s protracted war against Iran, as another possible motivation for Trump’s bizarre broadside.

He continued: “We must not ignore the fact that Trump is in a deep political hole that he dug for himself when he attacked Israel and Iran on February 28, and he wants us to forget it.

“The world economy will begin to shake very, very soon. We will all pay the price for a war we did not choose, a war that every sane person says America cannot win against a vile ideological regime that will continue to fight no matter what.

“Somewhere along the line Trump realized he had achieved this.

“Just like Netanyahu bombs Lebanon when he’s in trouble, Trump word-bombs anyone who dares to criticize his crazy actions.”

Responding to Trump’s tirade, the pope said he did not want to “get into an argument” with Mr. Trump, adding that the message of the Bible had been “abused” by some people.

“I will continue to speak out against war, promote peace, promote dialogue between states and multilateral relations, and seek just solutions to problems,” he told reporters aboard the papal plane as he embarked on a 10-day tour of Africa.
