Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised India’s UPI initiative and Malaysia’s status as home to the world’s second largest community of Indian origin, which serves as a vibrant link between the two countries through shared culture, cuisines like Roti Canai, Malabar Parotta, coconut, spices and Teh Tarik, and linguistic similarities between Indian languages and Malay.
Hindi music and movies are hugely popular here, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s singing talent, especially his performance of Hindi songs going viral in India, and his love for Tamil legend MGR’s songs bridging the gap further.
He also highlighted that India has reaffirmed its embrace of this diaspora through the recent expansion of OCI card eligibility to sixth-generation Malaysian Indians, continued support to the Indian Scholarship Trust Fund (ISTF) that helps meritorious students from weaker economic backgrounds, the new Thiruvalluvar Scholarship for those studying in India, and invitations to the ‘Know India’ programme.
