Tube fares to rise by 6% this weekend – this trick can help you save

Fares on the London Underground, Overground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and Elizabeth Line will increase this weekend (Sunday, March 1). The increases were first announced in December; Peak pay-as-you-go fares for Zone 1 journeys will rise from £2.90 to £3.10.

Some good news is that the prices of Travel Cards, which are paper tickets that offer unlimited travel in certain regions, have been frozen until 2027. Adult pay-as-you-go limits, which are the limits on the total amount you pay per day or week, will not increase until next year at the earliest.

As we all despair about yet another rise in the cost of living, you may think there’s not much you can do except take the bus, bike, or walk more often, which isn’t possible for everyone.

Fortunately, there is still a way to make money from rides in the capital. Here I’m sharing a lesser-known trick that can help you make significant savings (maybe even hundreds of dollars). Keep scrolling for all the details.

You can save up to a third on off-peak metro journeys with a train card

By linking your railcard to an Oyster card you can save up to a third on off-peak London Tube, Elizabeth Line, Overground and National Rail fares.

To do this you’ll need to order an Oyster card or register your card online if you already have one. You will then need to take both your railcard and Oyster card to a Tube, Overground or Elizabeth Line station and ask a member of staff to connect the two.

Once this is complete, you will automatically be taken on a third off-peak journey when you use your Oyster card. Unfortunately this doesn’t work for contactless payments but I hope TfL will look to introduce this functionality.

If you don’t already have a railcard, it’s probably worth investing in one if you can, even if you don’t live or work in London. You get a one-third discount on most train fares, so you’ll pay for it in just a few journeys. Last year, my railcard saved me around £163 on national rail travel – and that’s without taking into account the money I saved traveling within London.

Note that you can only add the following railcards to an Oyster account: 16-25 railcard, 26-30 railcard, senior railcard, HM Forces railcard, veterans railcard and disabled people railcard.
