MPs could be recalled to Parliament next month so Andy Burnham can be questioned as Prime Minister.

House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has signaled he is prepared to order a two-day recall in August to allow MPs to question the new owner of No10.

Parliamentary sources said Mr Burnham had indicated he needed at least two weeks to form his new government before facing MPs, during which time Parliament would go into its long summer recess.

But Sir Linday opened the door to a hearing next month.

A source said: “Six weeks is a long time to go by without proper parliamentary scrutiny. It’s perhaps understandable that Andy wants two weeks to get things sorted, but that doesn’t mean we have to wait until September.”

“I think if people want to come back for a few days in early August then the Speaker won’t be able to stand in their way.”

Sir Lindsay has plans for Mr Burnham and his senior team to face a “mega scrutiny” session in parliament if he delays his appearance in parliament until the autumn. Mail reported.

Labor blocked Conservative attempts to extend the session of Parliament into next week to allow Mr Burnham to come under scrutiny, paving the way for Burnham to run for six weeks of completely unaccountable government before parliament returns in September.

MPs will go into summer recess on Thursday and Mr Burnham will be crowned Labor leader on Friday.

Sir Keir Starmer is set to see the King on Monday morning to resign as Prime Minister, after which Mr Burnham will be crowned the nation’s new leader.

The former Mayor of Manchester won the Makerfield by-election last month.

The Conservatives branded Mr Burnham a “coronation chicken” after plans for a vote on the issue were vetoed at the last minute by Labor.
