Twisha Sharma death case: husband taken into custody, M.P. HC allows second autopsy

Twisha Sharma’s husband Samarth Singh, who allegedly ended his life recently, was detained by the Madhya Pradesh Police on Friday, May 22, 2026, after remaining on the run for days in connection with the dowry death and harassment case, officials said. The Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a second post-mortem of Sharma’s body by an expert AIIMS Delhi team.

The case witnessed a series of developments on Friday, with the State government recommending a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, two days after Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met Sharma’s family.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, the Government of Madhya Pradesh hereby consents to extend the powers and jurisdiction of the members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment to the entire State of Madhya Pradesh for the purpose of investigation of the above case,” a notification issued by the MP Home Ministry said.

Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar confirmed Mr. Singh’s arrest, saying the police would produce him before the court within 24 hours.

“Yes, he (accused Samarth Singh) has been taken into custody and our police team is carrying out this entire process. We have to produce him in the court within 24 hours. So we will produce him within the given time,” the commissioner said.

Mr. Singh, a lawyer, was detained by the Jabalpur Police when he arrived at the district court there. “He appeared in the Jabalpur District Court to surrender himself, but the court was not available. Following this, Jabalpur Police took him into custody and handed him over to Bhopal Police,” his lawyer Jaideep Kaurav said.

“I have no information about the commotion in the District Court. He had come to the District Court to surrender, but the judge there had already left as the court time had expired and the court was not available. The police took his custody from the court and then handed him over to the Bhopal police. The Bhopal police have taken him into custody, so there is a possibility that he will be produced in the Bhopal court tomorrow,” he told a news agency.

Hearing the petition filed by Sharma’s father Navnidhi Sharma, Justice Avanindra Kumar Singh said that since the woman died within six months of her marriage, a second post-mortem should be conducted to clear all doubts. The court decided that the hearing will be held in Bhopal.

“After considering all the reasons, this Court is also of the view that by ordering a second post-mortem, neither this Court nor the petitioner has directly or indirectly imputed any wrongful motive or raised any doubt on the earlier post-mortem report or anyone other than the death of the deceased to have taken place within six months of the marriage, therefore, the second post-mortem should be conducted to clear all doubts in any circle. Accordingly, as agreed during the hearing, this Court, a representative of the Director, AIIMS, New Delhi.” The Supreme Court said that a team of experts should arrive at the earliest via a special flight organized by the State Government to conduct the autopsy examination.

Hearing another petition challenging the bail granted to retired judge Giribala Singh, Sharma’s mother-in-law and an accused in the case, by a local Bhopal court, the Supreme Court directed him to appear before it on or before May 25.

Advocate Ankur Pandey, representing Sharma’s family, said that the family, as well as the State government, also challenged the advance bail order, following which the Supreme Court issued notice to Ms. Singh.

Commissioner Kumar told reporters that police had issued three notices to Ms Singh and her bail decision was being appealed because she was “not co-operating” with the investigation. He said the police cited allegations from Sharma’s family that Ms Singh had made numerous phone calls to influential people and judicial authorities following the woman’s death.

Responding to questions on allegations of “lack of cooperation” by the local police, the official said, “We registered the FIR within two days, so we took immediate action in this regard. The remaining investigation is ongoing by us. CBI’s investigation is a government-level matter.”

33-year-old Sharma was found hanged in his house in Bhopal on the night of May 12. She had married Mr Singh on December 25 last year. His family made various allegations against Mr Singh and his mother, including mental abuse and financial demands.

While Mr. Singh remains at large since the registration of an FIR in the case on May 15, the case took an ugly turn when his mother alleged before the media that Sharma was dealing with mental illness, was taking medications prescribed for schizophrenic patients and was addicted to contraband substances like marijuana.
