Two California officers hospitalized after alleged attack by incarcerated man | California

Two California prison officers were hospitalized after they were allegedly attacked by an incarcerated man, and authorities are investigating the incident as attempted murder, authorities said Sunday.

The incident occurred Saturday at the California state prison in Sacramento, when the suspect was escorted from his cell to allow staff to search him, according to the state. department of corrections and rehabilitation.

“Staff used physical force and chemical agents to quickly suppress the attack, and a homemade weapon was found at the scene,” the Department of Corrections said in a statement.

The officers were transferred in fair condition, the statement said.

Authorities said the 48-year-old male suspect was placed in restricted housing during the investigation. He arrived at the facility in 2011 to serve a 17-year prison sentence that included injuries to his wife. Received an additional four-year sentence in 2022 for possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon.

The case will be referred to the Sacramento County district attorney’s office for possible felony investigation.

The prison, northeast of the state capital, holds more than 2,200 medium, maximum and high security detainees.
