Assam couple booked for another birthday celebration on Brahmaputra bridge

A day after arresting 14 people for holding a midnight birthday party on a crowded bridge over the Brahmaputra River, Guwahati police arrested a couple for a similar crime.

Staff at Bharalumukh police station detained Surajit Mandal and his wife Bijaya Mandal, residents of Guwahati’s Fatashil Ambari area, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, after a video showing birthday celebrations at Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu went viral on social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rs 3,030-crore bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati in February. This is the northeast region’s first extradose bridge – somewhere between a traditional beam and cable-stayed span – bridge.

In the video, Mr. Mandal, along with several friends, is seen celebrating his wife’s birthday, allegedly by blocking part of the road and using electronic sparklers and fireworks. Police did not specify the date of the celebration.

The couple has been booked under Sections 285 (danger or obstruction on public way or route of navigation), 270 (public nuisance) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “An SUV used during the celebration was seized,” said an officer from Bharalumukh police station.

The approach to the bridge is approximately 300 meters from the police station.

Meanwhile, businessman Gautam Baruah and 13 other people, who attended his birthday celebration on the same bridge on the night of June 21, were released on bail on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

“The accused were released after medical examinations, biometric verification and other procedural requirements as the offenses registered against them were bailable in nature,” the police officer said.
