UCLA sorority row hires private security amid homeless harassment: report

Sororities at a leading Southern California university will now have special night security after facing constant harassment from homeless people that left some young women feeling unsafe, according to a report.

The UCLA Panhellenic Association, which describes itself as the school’s largest women’s fraternity, hired private security guards to guard the sorority row that spans several blocks of Hilgard Boulevard on the university’s Los Angeles campus. California Post.

Young women reported aggressive behavior from homeless people who repeatedly approached them and made suggestive comments, and they chastised campus police for not responding to their concerns.

“We had a meeting with UCPD a few weeks ago and it didn’t go very well,” 20-year-old student Ani Hovanesian told The Post. “They didn’t seem to be aware of the problem and they weren’t really proactive. They kept pushing it back to us like, ‘Why don’t you call 911 or report these things,’ and it was like hmm, we’re here and that’s why we’re here.”

Another student, 20-year-old Catherine Nichley, said she did not feel “completely safe”.

“The funny thing is, there are usually the same three homeless men hanging around this row, usually between the ages of 40 and 60, sitting at the bus stop,” he told The Post.

He described a man nicknamed the “Hilgard Screamer” who screamed randomly at all hours of the day and night.

“These guys look into your soul,” Nichley told the outlet. “They’re making lewd comments and I’m like, ‘What are you looking at?’ I shouted. Because it feels so scary.”

Another sorority member said she rarely sees campus police in the area and feels safer walking near fraternity houses where there is a greater police presence. He added that sometimes homeless people sleep on sorority lawns.

The University of California Police Department said it conducts regular patrols in the area.

“UCPD takes seriously the concerns expressed by students about harassment and disruptive behavior near Hilgard Boulevard. Students should feel safe where they live, study and walk near campus, and we are listening closely,” the department told Fox News Digital.

“UCPD conducts regular, directed patrols of the area, including increased evening presence, and continues to work with campus partners, student leaders, and department stakeholders to address concerns and connect students with support,” the department added.
