Liverpool dealt devastating Alexander Isak injury blow: £125m star facing months out after undergoing surgery on fractured leg

Alexander Isak had surgery to repair a fracture in his left leg and will likely be out until next spring.

Liverpool were bracing for bad news after an MRI scan was carried out on Sunday to determine the extent of the injury Isak sustained in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Although it was quickly discounted that Isak had suffered ACL damage (an injury that could have ended his campaign), they were aware that the prognosis would not be good.

Scans confirmed the lower leg was broken, and on Monday he underwent successful surgery to reattach the bone.

Liverpool are not putting any pressure on Isak to return to fitness and there is no timetable other than it is expected to be a few months.

The minimum time for a leg fracture is usually 12 weeks and if that timeline is worked out, Isak is expected to be ready for the international break next March.

There is no escaping that this will be a huge blow for the 26-year-old, who moved to Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September for £125 million.

After scoring his second goal in the Premier League for Liverpool, he was injured after a fierce challenge from Tottenham defender Mickey Van de Ven. In total, he has three goals in 16 appearances in all competitions.

On Saturday, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot responded to a question about the injury: ‘We’ll have to wait and see. But if a player scores a goal and gets injured and doesn’t try to get back on the pitch, that’s usually not a good thing.’

It is Isak’s latest and most serious setback since swapping Tyneside for Merseyside. He came into the match lacking fitness and struggled to make an impact in his first six weeks before suffering a groin problem against Eintracht Frankfurt.

He returned to score his first Premier League goal in last month’s win over West Ham, but his goal against Tottenham was the first time he truly showed the quality of why Liverpool are looking to break the British transfer record.

This defeat came at a time when Liverpool were without Mohamed Salah, who played in the Africa Cup of Nations, and had only Hugo Ekitike as their only suitable centre-back.
