UK employers face World Cup headache over staff absence and late kick-offs

Employers are being asked to put in place clear policies on staff days off, sick leave and flexible working in the run-up to the World Cup.

Conciliation service Acas has advised businesses to consider a more adaptable approach to giving employees time off during the football tournament, which starts next Thursday.

Susan McGuigan, Aca’s head of workplace advice, said: “The World Cup is an exciting event for many football fans, but staff should avoid receiving a red card for unreasonable demands or behavior in the workplace during this period.

“Many organizations need to maintain a certain level of staffing to operate effectively. Bosses should establish a set of simple workplace agreements before starting work to help them keep staff together while ensuring their business remains productive.”

The World Cup will be held between June 11 and July 19 in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

Due to the time difference, match kick-off times in the UK will vary between 5pm and 5am, and Acas said staff may wish to watch or listen to pre-match preparations.

Acas said employers may want to remind employees that sickness and absence policies still apply during the World Cup.

Any unauthorized absences, absenteeism or late attendance will likely be investigated and may result in legal action.

One option is to have a more flexible working day, allowing employees to start later or finish earlier and agree to make up the time, Acas said.
