UK households in 50 areas sent ‘danger to life’ warning for Wednesday | UK | News

A “danger to life” warning has been issued ahead of extreme heat this week, where temperatures could reach a scorching 40C. Temperatures of 37 degrees are expected to be seen in the south of England and 35 degrees in southeast Wales on Tuesday.
The heatwave will peak on Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures are expected to rise to at least 39°C, although this may be exceeded in some places. The Met Office later issued a red extreme heat alert for Wednesday and Thursday, warning that severe weather could put vulnerable people’s lives at risk. The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has also issued a series of heat health alerts, warning of a “risk to life even for the healthy population”.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Emergency Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “We are calling on health and social care services across the country to ensure they are prepared.
“It is vital that people understand the risk posed by such high temperatures and take steps to keep themselves, their friends, family and neighbors safe.
“A red heat health alert indicates a risk to life even for healthy populations, but simple actions like staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day, and keeping your home cool can make a big difference.
“It is also important to keep an eye out for others, especially older relatives, neighbors and those with underlying health conditions, to make sure they are aware of the forecast and follow the necessary advice.”
