Passport application fee to go up from July 1

As the Union government revised the passport fee structure through an amendment to the Passport Rules, 1980, the application fee for a new ordinary 36-page passport has been increased from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. The new rules will come into force from July 1.

According to a June 20 notification issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday, June 25, 2026, reissuance of a 36-page passport will also cost ₹2,500, while tatkal application for a new or reissued passport will cost ₹5,000 as against the existing ₹3,500.
Similarly, the application fee for a new ordinary passport or reissuance of a 60-page passport has been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500. For Tatkal, the revised fee for 60-page passports will be 6,000 Indian rupees instead of the current 4,000 Indian rupees.
The rules have been changed
“Using the powers conferred by Section 24 of the Passport Act, 1967 (15 of 1967), the Central Government further carries out the following rules to amend the Passport Rules, 1980: 1. (1) These rules may be called the Passport (Amendment) Rules, 2026. (2) It shall come into force from 1st July, 2026.” the notification said.

In its notification, the government also issued a schedule to replace “Schedule IV of the Passport Rules, 1980”. Two subcategories are mentioned in the revised program: For applicants aged 18 and over and, if applying under this category, for minors aged 15-18; and minor applicants under the age of 18.
