A popular seaside town named the UK’s best place to visit in 2025 is getting a big splash as part of a £20 million regeneration project. Major transformation works in Folkestone, Kent started in April 2025 and construction is expected to be completed on time this summer.
The massive project is gaining “real momentum” and the next phase of works will begin soon, according to Folkestone & Hythe District Council. Under the proposals, Folkestone would replace its ugly bus terminal in Bouverie Square with a new park that councilors have dubbed a “green heart” for the town. The council said the new public space would transform the town center into “a much more welcoming space, including a playground for residents and visitors to enjoy”.
According to the council’s website, the transformation project is now more than 40% complete, but disruption will continue for now, with public toilets temporarily closed and reopened in late spring. The area around the bus terminal was closed while disused shelters were removed and plant walls demolished.

James Butcher, the council’s cabinet member for placeplans, heritage, tourism and the regional economy, said: “There is real momentum now with the Folkestone – A Brighter Future project and Bouverie Square is set to become a focal point for the community.
“Although it has been a short-term disruption, I am delighted that we have been able to deliver refurbished toilets as part of this exciting next chapter.”
Just 90 minutes from London, Folkestone is located in a valley between cliffs on the edge of the Northern Downs on the English Channel. It was once an important seaport and shipping port, and a popular seaside resort throughout much of the 19th and 20th centuries. It offers a mix of Victorian architecture, thriving independent shops in the Creative Quarter and coastal views.
Sunny Sands beach has impressive coastal amenities including Lower Leas Coastal Park and the spectacular Zigzag Walk. Folkestone Harbor Arm was once a ferry terminal but has now been transformed into a popular promenade with independent food stalls, bars and live entertainment. Known for its major international Folkestone Triennial arts festival, the small seaside town also has the largest collection of urban open-air contemporary art in the UK.
Folkestone was also named the best place to live in the South East in 2024 by The Sunday Times for its transformation, culture and coastal charm. It offers high-speed rail services providing quick access to London, making it ideal for commuters. It is also a relatively affordable alternative to other Kent coastal towns such as Whitstable.
