Work begins to overhaul notorious Brisbane rail crossing following fatal accidents
Initial work to completely overhaul Brisbane’s notorious level crossing is set to begin, but the project is still more than a year away from completion.
There have been two deaths and dozens of “bad accidents” at the Lindum level crossing in Wynnum West in the past decade.
An old woman in 2019 hit and killed after being hit by a train. Two years later, a 32-year-old woman died when her car was hit by a train.
An investigation later found that Queensland Rail Lack of safety inspections at level crossings ‘very likely’ contributed to second death.
“We can’t wait any longer,” infrastructure chief Ryan Murphy told the Brisbane City Council chamber on Tuesday.
“[We’re] “I’m doing this because this situation of near misses and tragic events at the level crossing cannot continue.”
Energex crews will begin moving underground power cables near Lindum Station and along Lindum Road starting June 15, and this work is expected to take approximately four months.
Major construction work will begin in mid-2027.
The renovation will include realigning crossings, reducing vehicle speeds to 40 kilometers per hour on all approaches, and installing new traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and shared paths.
Median islands and an extended barrier gate had been built previously.
