Jack Frost isn’t done with Britain yet, as a spring snowfall is predicted to freeze parts of the country. The white stuff is expected to descend towards the end of April, just weeks after bright sunlight recorded a Met Office record 26.5 degrees in London.

The topsy-turvy weather conditions may mean many people won’t be able to take off their bulky jackets just yet, as new maps from WXCharts show it could snow within 24 hours on Sunday, April 26. In England, showers may occur in parts of West Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumberland, Derbyshire and Greater Manchester, particularly around the Pennines.

North of the border, various parts of Scotland are expected to be hit, with the Highlands, Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh, Lothians and Glasgow, and the Clyde Valley potentially seeing the coldest conditions.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast, covering 20-29 April, predicts that a mix of high and low pressure will struggle to maintain control over the UK.

The statement said: “High pressure in the North and North-East of the UK will initially bring plenty of dry weather and sunny skies for most.

“Low pressure in the Atlantic will attempt to push weather fronts from the Southwest towards the UK, but these may continue to move slowly.

“Parts of the east coast may be cool with low cloud and onshore winds, but further west is likely to feel quite warm, particularly in sunny areas.

“There are signs that from next weekend and into the start of the following week, unstable weather may return for a period of time and bring rain or showers to some areas.”

Met Office five-day forecast

Although there are sunny weather and showers, many places remain. The heaviest of the showers in the north are intermittent hail and thunderstorms. Then clouds and rain spread from the southwest. The heat continues in the southeast.

Early showers taper off, leaving clear spells behind. Clouds and rain come from the west, and heavy and showery rain comes from the north. Light fog and light mist are expected in the southeast.

Fog clears the southeast with a largely dry start, with early sunny spells. Rain moves eastward across the country throughout the day. Heavy showers continue in the northwest. The wind is getting stronger.

Outlook from Saturday to Monday:

Showers are heavy in places in the north on Saturday, but much drier in the south. A dry day to end the weekend, which will continue until Monday. Staying warm most days.
