Kerala to take urgent steps to tackle waterlogging in Thiruvananthapuram: Minister Mons Joseph

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Minister Mons Joseph said on Sunday that the government will take immediate steps to address the serious waterlogging problems reported in various parts of the state capital in the wake of recent rains.

Joseph said that the situation, especially in areas such as Thampanoor and Chakka, is being taken with utmost seriousness.

He said the chief engineer of the irrigation department has been instructed to submit a report immediately on the reasons behind the flood and water stagnation.

The state water resources minister said that as per reports submitted by senior officials, the irrigation department has already given the preliminary approval sought by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for cleaning and restoration of Parvathy Puthanar and Amayizhanjan canals.

He also stated that the government is ready to hold discussions with all stakeholders, including the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, on implementing measures to address the issue.


The minister also held discussions with ministers K Muraleedharan and CP John on necessary steps to solve the waterlogging problem in the city.
Following discussions, the government decided to hold a high-level meeting on June 2 at 16:00 in the water resources minister’s office in the Secretariat.

In the statement, it was stated that at the meeting to be attended by three ministers and senior officials, the causes of the waterlogging will be reviewed, ongoing measures will be evaluated and further corrective steps will be decided.
